There’s a kind of inertia to life. Every once in a while, something breaks the rhythm, the hypnosis. You look around and wonder, “Is this what I want? Is this all I want?”

It feels like life has kind of gotten the better of you, that you can’t really fight back against the forces of time, of your accumulated responsibilities. The world is set up to narrow your choices, to extract something out of you. Even your career or interests—these things take time and energy, and there’s no promise they’ll give something back.

To the extent you have a choice, it’s how—or to what—you sacrifice your life.

Maybe there’s a sort of nihilistic freedom in acknowledging that. By saying it’s all arbitrary, that making any effort is self-exploitative, you shouldn’t worry so much about making the right decisions. You should, on some level, just follow your heart and do what you want to do.

UNSHINE is a sarcastic rallying cry. Instead of trying to shine, to feel the pressure of living your best life (whatever that means), you can live whatever life you choose to. You can un-shine every day.
